Interpretation Design

Historic Royal Palaces, 2018

During my internship with Interpretation and Design at Historic Royal Palaces, I had the opportunity to serve as Interpretation Manager for the Christmas Experience at Hampton Court Palace. The theme of “Christmas through the Ages” was expressed through historically accurate decorations and an interactive installation.

To represent Christmas Past I worked with the curatorial team to research Christmas traditions throughout English history. The palace was used by the royal family from Henry VIII in the 16th century to George III in the 18th century. With that knowledge I collaborated with a florist to develop appropriate Tudor and Georgian greenery throughout the palace.

As part of the Christmas Present aspect of the experience, I designed an interactive installation onto which visitors could share their own Christmas traditions. This design used more modern materials while still complementing the historic atmosphere. It proved so popular with guests that it will become a permanent addition to the palace’s Christmas offering.
